Hurricanes are dangerous, often deadly, destroy billions of dollars of property wherever they make landfall and can absolutely ruin lives at any given moment. Being prepared to deal with a hurricane striking coastal and inland communities can be the difference between life and death in extreme cases, and even when it is not, every person at risk for facing a hurricane is well-advised to make a hurricane safety emergency plan.

Locating local shelters is a first step. When hurricanes reach a significant strength, or for low-lying areas facing increased risks of flooding or other troubles, local emergency shelters offer a safe and well-provisioned place for individuals and families to weather the storm. Many local emergency shelters are located at schools, hospitals and government buildings which benefit from having their own electricity generators, health care workers, and are well-stocked with food, water, blankets and other necessary items. Families with members with health concerns should check into whether or not local shelters are equipped to provide for their ongoing health and care.

Personal stocks of sufficient food and water are important to add to a hurricane safety emergency plan. With some communities going without clean running water for days or even weeks at a time, having a large quantity of drinking water available can make a great difference when it comes to surviving a hurricane.

There are actually various areas that are more prone to hurricanes than others. This is something that you may want to keep in mind, especially when you want to move to a new location. Any area that is close to the oceans and coast are all prone to hurricanes. Living right off of the coast makes you vulnerable to a lot of different weather changes. That is why it is important that you are well aware of these things before you re locate to a new area. If you already are aware of them, you need to always make sure that you have an evacuation plan in case you need to get out of your situation. There are many things that you can consider when hurricane season takes place. Some people do not, and may not ever have to worry about hurricanes coming near them. Hurricanes start in the ocean, so if you are someone who lives close to the ocean then you should be aware of them. You may not have anything to worry about, the further you are away from these bodies of water. If this is something that worries you then you should re consider your options.

We’ve all heard about the recent hurricanes that have devastated the United States. As of 2011, Hurricane Irene is fresh in people’s memories. There are other storms, greater storms, like Hurricane Katrina, that ran across New Orleans, tearing across the land. While hurricanes that cause as much damage as Irene and Katrina did don’t happen every day, it’s important to be prepared in the event of a hurricane. People usually ask two questions: What should I bring along with me, and what should I keep in my house in the event of a hurricane?

Bring it with You
If you’re fleeing from a hurricane, travel light by packing only the essentials in your car. Important documents should go in the car first, like birth certificates, identification cards, and passports. Don’t forget your social security cards. Many people also bring family photographs and things that can’t be replaced, like wedding rings and valuable heirlooms.

When traveling in a car, be prepared to spend time in your car if it becomes a necessity. Blankets, food, and clean water should all be packed. If you have anyone with a special needs diet, such as a baby who needs baby food or someone on a gluten-free diet, bring food specifically for them.

Weathering out the Hurricane
If you’re staying at home during the hurricane, make sure you have the essentials on hand. Clean water and plenty of food are at the top of the list, since wind and water can damage the food and water supply. Make sure the food is canned, as the electricity in your town may be down.

There are many ways that you can become prepared for a hurricane. You are just going to have to figure these things out in advanced. You need to make sure that you have an evacuation plan before a hurricane hits. This is very important because you are going to have to make sure that if you do not have time to follow your plan, that you have alternatives. You should create a list with these plans and alternatives so that you can better be prepared. Another thing to keep in mind is that may want to make sure that you have stocked up on food supplies. The best types of food to buy are canned goods and water bottles, etc. You need to find things that do not require you to heat up. You never know what to expect during a hurricane, but you want to make sure that you remain safe. The best place to be is away from the hurricane, so that is why it is important to have a get away plan so you are not stuck in the house. You never want to try and escape during a hurricane, only before. These will all help you.
